Don’t forget, however, that there are no magic tonics or masks; these things take time.

1. Balanced diet

As with everything else that has to do with any part of our body, diet has an effect on hair growth too. Unfortunately, there are no foods that will make your locks twice as thick and thrice as shiny, as they were before, but there are foods that have been found to promote hair growth. These include nuts, fish, eggs , meat, poultry and seeds. Basically, proteins, because protein sources give you fatty acids that make your scalp healthy and a healthy scalp means healthy hair. Meat and eggs, specifically, are also very good sources of iron, and iron is essential for healthy hair – sometimes hair loss is a result of iron deficiency.

2. Onions

One of the well known natural products for hair growth is onion. No one said helping your hair grow will smell of perfume. It may be hard to wrap your head around this, but onions are a true treasure. They help with more than one health issue and they promote hair growth. How? By giving a boost to collagen production in the scalp when applied topically, because they contain sulphur (the cause of the stink, by the way) and sulphur encourages collagen production. Collagen helps the hair grow. It’s as simple as that. And you thought all stinks are bad. The way to use onions for hair growth is equally simple: squeeze some juice from chopped onions and massage it into your scalp. Leave for at least 15 minutes, then wash your hair. Better do it when you’re alone in the house for obvious reasons. Bare in mind that the onion smell might remain with you for quite a while. We all know that beauty often demands some sort of sacrifices.

3. Potatoes

Let’s stay a bit longer with veggies. Another one of good natural products for hair growth is potato. After all, we’re talking about natural means and many of these natural means are in your kitchen. So, potatoes. Potato juice – which is not stinky – also helps the hair grow because of the vitamins it contains and that get destroyed when you cook them. Those vitamins are A, B, and C, all with a major part to play in healthy hair. So, what you do is grate some potatoes, or put them in a juice extractor, if you have one, then rub the juice in your scalp, let it stay for 15 minutes, then wash off. By the way, if there’s any juice left, use it for a face mask – those vitamins are great for the skin on your face as well! And it’s not just the vitamins but also starch – it has a smoothing effect on the skin – face and scalp alike – and soothes any irritations you might have.

4. Herbs

When it comes to natural treatments, herbs are the first thing that springs to mind, and with a good reason. Most of the plants we use in cooking are also great for a variety of health problems, including hair loss. Here are some of the best ones: rosemary, nettle and aloe vera. You can make a herbal oil by putting a few fresh rosemary branches in olive oil, letting them stay in for a week, then using the oil as a scalp mask. Olive oil is good on its own, but rosemary stimulates blood circulation, which in turn promotes healthy hair growth. So does aloe vera gel, applied on its own. As for nettle, it’s particularly good if you have problems with hair loss. You can either do the olive oil trick again – you’ll need to let the nettle stay for three weeks in the oil before using it, though – or simply boiling a tablespoon of dry nettle in 500 ml of water, and using the infusion to rinse your hair after washing it. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have a strong, persistent smell. Pour some on your clean hair, massage, then put some more, and massage again. Nettle is also great for removing dandruff.

5. Eggs

Eggs are one of the most wholesome foods there are and it’s another one of good natural products for hair growth. Forget about accusations that they raise cholesterol. They don’t raise the bad cholesterol, and anyway this is irrelevant when we talk about hair, because you’ll be applying the yolks and whites externally. One of the best masks for shiny, strong hair is made from egg yolks. That’s right – just a couple of yolks, rubbed into the skin of the scalp and applied to the whole length of your hair. Let the mask stay for half an hour, then rinse off. Don’t worry about it hardening, as the yolks dry up. You can mix them with a spoonful of olive oil for better effect. Now, the whites are used in pretty much the same way but there’s a word of caution needed here: you must rinse the egg-white mask with cool water, otherwise the whites will congeal and you’ll have a problem on your hands, or rather, in your hair.
