10 Little known tips on how to get healthier and longer hair

Long, soft and shiny locks are something that lots of girls would like to have, but they lack the patience to let it happen. Long hair may well mean that “wash and go” becomes a thing of the past, but that can be a small price to pay for beautiful long hair. There is nothing at all wrong with short hair, of course, it looks wonderful, but if you are trying to grow your hair long, here are ten tips that will help make it grow faster and keep it looking healthy.

1. Have regular trims

Trimming your hair won’t make it grow any faster, that’s just a myth, but, if you don’t have your hair trimmed regularly, it will make the process of growing your hair long take more time. If you don’t keep your hair trimmed, split ends will have more time travel further up the strands of hair and that means that, the next time you do get your hair trimmed, more will have to be cut off.

2. Remember that it won’t grow overnight

Don’t be impatient! Most people’s hair grows at a rate of about a quarter of an inch a month, so it will be a while before your hair reaches your waist! There is a lot you can do to protect your hair from damage and encourage new growth, but here are no miracle ways of growing long hair.

3. Don’t shampoo every day

Shampoo is great for removing dirt, product build-up, and excess oil from your hair, but your hair needs some of those natural oils to keep it healthy and shiny. Most people don’t need to shampoo every day, so skip a day and let your hair stay healthy the natural way. It will also help keep your hair healthy if you switch to mild shampoo, because harsh shampoos will strip all the natural oils out of your hair.

4. Keep your hair well-conditioned

To keep your hair healthy and to help it grow long, you need to condition your hair every time it gets wet. Conditioners rehydrate hair and they replace protein and lipids that you lose through washing, so conditioner is not an optional extra, it’s a must!

5. Cold rinse after a shower

A splash of cold water in your hair after you have shampooed will help keep your hair healthy and it will look a lot better too. A cold water rinse will close up the cuticles and it helps prevent damage too. You don’t need to spend too long under the cold water, just enough to take the heat out of your hair.

6. Use a hot oil treatment once a week

When your hair does start to get long, you have to remember that the hair at the ends of your tresses will be getting on a bit in age so they will need extra care to keep them in good health. The best way to keep long hair strong and healthy is to use a hot oil treatment once a week. Hair stylists recommend applying hot oil to damp hair and leaving it on for 10 minutes before you shampoo you it out with a mild shampoo.

7. Brush your hair to spread the natural oils

Brushing your hair doesn’t only make your hair look neat, it also spreads the natural oils in your hair along the entire length and it also helps to stimulate the circulation in your scalp. Give your hair a good brush, at least twice a day, and don’t forget to brush hair last thing at night, just before you go to bed. When you brush, use a natural bristle brush and start at the crown of your head and work your way down.

8. Avoid sulphates

Most experts agree that sulphates are bad for your hair. They dry out your hair, making it more brittle and therefore more prone to damage. Unfortunately, most big brands of shampoos do contain sulphates because they make shampoo foam better. Make a point of looking for sulphate free shampoo or, alternatively, you could make your shampoo at home. Whichever way you do it, avoiding shampoo with sulphates will keep your hair a lot healthier.

9. Eat more protein

If you are not eating a healthy diet and you are allowing yourself to become dehydrated, then your hair is one of the first things that will suffer. Ramp up your intake of protein and that will give your hair the nourishment that it needs to grow long and healthy. You also need to drink plenty of water so that you don’t get dehydrated. That will also help keep your hair healthy looking.

10. Massage your scalp

Massaging your scalp increases the circulation and it stimulates the follicles, it’s also really relaxing and it reduces tension. The easiest and most effective way to massage your scalp is to combine it with a hot oil treatment. Then, you’d improve the health and condition of your hair and encourage new growth at the same time.
