10 Top tips and home remedies for split ends

Sometimes, it seems as though no matter how hard you try, and no matter what you try, split ends just won’t go away. They just want to keep splitting.

For ladies, this frustrating. Like super frustrating. Ironically, it makes you want to tear your hair out and be done with it.

For anyone like myself who uses curling irons and straighteners every single day while spending hours upon hours protecting our main with the products we were told would work, it seems like this particular epic battle is one that we will probably never win. After 11 rounds, the split ends have one each one.

Now, however, is time for the knock-out.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and if your split ends have backed you into a corner it’s time to come out fighting. Let’s take a look at 10 top tips that will banish split ends forever.

Learn Hot To Work 2nd Hair Day

Yes, most of us probably shower every single day. But while hygiene is important, washing your hair every single day might actually not be so ideal.

It’s a good idea to try washing your mane every other day instead of blasting it under the shower head every single morning – and then again in the evening.

Popping into the shower and cleansing your body while keeping your hair wrapped in a bun can work. It allows your hair to properly itself with its own natural oils, and this is good for protection against spilt ends.

You could even try washing your hair once every three days for even better results.

Apply An Egg Mask

Because eggs are loaded with protein, they make for a great remedy for treating split ends. And because your hair is rich in protein, too, it is eggs that can strengthen your weary follicles.

Egg masks also make your hair smooth as well as reduce the risk of tangling. You can apply a mask just once a week, or you can apply one as often as you like.

Brush Properly

Still using the same brush you’ve relied on for the last ten years? It’s become a friend to you, right? Your trusted companion that never lets you down.

Only, your old brush could actually be the wrong type of brush – and it might be the prime suspect behind your split ends.

Picking the right brush is fundamental to avoid spit ends. If you brush every day, you should pick a cushion brush that comes with flexible bristles. This kind of brush really helps with detangling.

It’s important that you avoid hard plastic brushes because their thick bristles with tear your hair to shreds, especially if you use it every day.

As well as choosing the right brush, you need to also use it correctly. Don’t tug at your hair from root to tip instantly, but instead gently brush through your ends and then work your way slowly up to the midsection.

Avocado

Avocado is a wondrous fruit that offers numerous health benefits. But as well as eating it, you can also apply it your hair to treat split ends. Rich in protein, magnesium and vitamins A, D and E, it works as a fab deep conditioner.

Simply mash an avocado before mixing with 2 tbsp of coconut oil and a further 2 tbsp of olive oil until you get a creamy mixture.

Apply then mask to your hair before leaving for around thirty minutes. Repeat at least once a week.

Opt For Clean Cuts

If you’re already struggling with lots of breakage and your hair is already badly damaged, it’s time to start swapping rough chops at the salon for cleaner, blunter cuts. Avoid texturising, too.

Shampoo Your Scalp

By this we mean that you should avoid piling all your hair on top of your head in one big clump before scrubbing. This is not the way to shampoo, as it will cause unnatural bending that can easily cause split ends.

Instead, you need to let your hair hang loose and then lather your scalp with shampoo. Your ends will still get washed because they’ll pick up all the drips, or what we refer to as “second hand studs.”

Hair pros recommend shampooing your head in this way, and their maxim is that “less is more.” They also recommend that you use a shampoo that contains zero parabens, as these chemicals can be harmful, and could be the reason for your split ends.

Use Condiitoner

Always always always ALWAYS use conditioner. I can’t stress this enough. Apply it directly to your ends, and then let it soak in for a few minutes. And when you rinse, don’t make it your aim to rinse all of the conditioner out of there. Leave some in!

You should always always ALWAYS use product, and pair it up with a thermal protectant. And whenever you air dry, try to use a leave-in conditioner that nourishes your hair and creates a barrier that will guard against the elements.

Wear A Gentle Elastic

If you wear bands, you might want to start using a gentler elastic that is kinder to your hair. Some bands feel extra tight, and they do pull – and break – hair.

From now on, find one that has a hook on each side, and always avoid applying a band in wet hair as this just causes stress.

Dry Your Hair With A Towel The Right Way

If you’re like me, you probably rubbed your hair with a towel every which way in a bid to dry your soaking mane as quickly as possible. You probably shook your head this way and that, and perhaps even felt slightly dizzy afterwards.

But it’s important to remember that your hair is wet and vulnerable, and such force causes them to bend and contort in all manner of unnatural directions. This in turn can lead to breakage and those pesky split ends.

The advice here is to wrap a towel around your hair and then squeeze it with your hands.

Visit The Salon Frequently

Lastly, it’s important that you pay a visit to the salon as often as possible. If you don’t regularly cut your split ends, they can run and run – before ripping like a stocking.
