Top 10 home remedies for dry scalp

If you develop a dry, itchy scalp, it can be a constant annoyance to you, and it can be embarrassing in public too. Even worse than that, if you keep on scratching at your scalp for too long, it could lead to hair loss and you could be left with bald patches. The first thing you should do if your scalp starts to get dry and itchy is to think about changing your shampoo for a milder one and stop using any other hair products that might be causing the problem. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways that you can treat a dry scalp with natural products. Here are ten of the top home remedies for treating a dry and itchy scalp.

1. Bananas

Bananas are a great home remedy for an itchy scalp and they will condition your hair too. Simply mash up two ripe bananas and massage the pulp into your hair and scalp. Leave it to sit on your hair for about half an hour and the banana will nourish and moisturize your scalp and it will reduce the itching.

2. Tea tree oil

The itching might be being caused by a fungal infection or dandruff. You can combine any of the ingredients in this list to get the best effect for you and, one of the best natural remedies for fungal infections is tea tree oil. You could add five drops of tea tree oil to mashed banana, for example, to get a home remedy that will moisturise and fight any fungal infection that you may have on your scalp. Alternatively, you could add tea tree oil to a mild shampoo and get the anti-fungal benefit that way.

3. Aloe vera

Aloe vera has amazing moisturising properties that will very quickly provide relief from a dry scalp. Massage some fresh aloe vera gel into your scalp and leave it on for fifteen minutes before you wash it out again with a mild shampoo. It will hydrate your scalp and you will probably notice the difference after just a single application.

4. Lemon juice

Lemon juice has antiseptic properties that will fight the itchiness of a dry scalp and it’s also a good treatment for dandruff too. You should apply lemon juice on its own to your scalp, or you could mix it with some the other moisturising ingredients we have mentioned here. Remember to thoroughly wash lemon juice out of your hair, though, because it can have a bleaching effect when exposed to the sun.

5. Avocado

Avocado is another natural ingredient that can be used to nourish and hydrate the scalp. Mash up the pulp of two ripe avocados and massage it into your hair and scalp. Leave it on for half an hour before you wash it out again. Repeat the treatment on a weekly basis and it will soon clear up a dry and itchy scalp.

6. Baking soda

Baking soda is a great ingredient to use with one of the hydrating ingredients we have mentioned here and it will exfoliate the scalp and remove all the dead and flaking skin and fight dandruff too. Try rubbing olive oil onto your scalp first and then apply a paste of baking soda and water and leave the mixture on for about fifteen minutes.

7. Sage

There are also a number of herbs that make a very good treatment for a dry scalp. Sage, for example, has the ability to remove the accumulation of dead skin from the scalp and prevent dryness. Steep a handful of fresh sage leaves in a cup of boiling hot water. Let it cool, and then massage into the scalp, preferably just after you have shampooed your hair.

8. Apple cider vinegar

If it’s an infection that is causing your itchy scalp, then apple cider vinegar will soon have that problem cleared up for you. Make a mixture of equal parts water and apple cider vinegar and rinse your hair with it. Leave it for about ten minutes and then shampoo it out. The antifungal and antibacterial properties of the apple cider vinegar will fight any infection and the vinegar will also help to balance out the PH of your hair.

9. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is a great moisturiser and it helps lock moisture into the skin, so it will cure a dry scalp and, with regular use, it will stop it coming back. You can just rub the oil into your scalp and leave it to sit for half an hour or, you could melt a little of the oil and add to your regular shampoo.

10. Sesame seed oil

The best way to use sesame seed oil as a remedy for a dry scalp is to warm it first, massage it into your scalp, and leave it on overnight. If you leave it on overnight, it will quickly rehydrate the scalp and stop any itching too.
