10 HAIR CARE TIPS FOR KINKY, CURLY AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN HAIR

10 Hair Care Tips for Kinky, Curly and Everything in Between Hair

Having curly or wavy hair has its advantages. Your hair will always look more bouncy and textured and many girls with straight hair spend hours putting curls in, while yours are just there all the time. As anyone with curly hair will know, though, curls can be difficult to handle and take care of. If you have natural curls, or you have had curls put in your straight hair, here ten curly hair care tips that you need to know.

1. Find yourself a good stylist

Curly hair generally needs trimming less frequently than straight hair, because it grows slower, but when you do get your hair trimmed, be sure that you go to a stylist who knows what they are doing. Not every stylist knows how to cut curly hair properly and a bad cut in curly hair can be a nightmare. Ask your friends for recommendations and don’t just assume that any stylist will do, because curly hair needs a stylist who really does know what they are doing.

2. Shampoo less frequently

Moderating how often you shampoo your hair is sensible advice for all hair types, but it is even more important of you have curly hair. When you have curly hair, the natural oils that keep your hair in good condition take longer to reach the tips of your hair, so over-washing will dry out your hair and make it unmanageable. Everyone is different, but you probably don’t need to shampoo curly hair more than twice a week.

3. Avoid heat

Heat can damage any type of hair, but with curly hair, it can actually change the curl pattern itself and that change will be irreversible. The best thing for curly hair is to let it air dry, because the dry heat from a blow-dryer will draw the moisture right out of your hair and cause damage, such as split ends. If you do use a blow-dryer, use it on a very low heat setting.

4. Try hot oil massages

Keeping your hair well-conditioned is an absolute must when you have curly hair and one way you can do that is with regular hot oil massages. Try using a mixture of almond oil, castor oil and olive oil. Warm it up and then massage it thoroughly into your scalp and throughout your hair. Leave it to sit for an hour and then wash out again.

5. Sleep on satin pillowcases

Satin pillowcases can help keep curly hair under control. Satin is better than cotton, because it creates less friction and it doesn’t soak up the oils in your hair as much. If you use satin pillowcases you will find that your hair will look a lot better, you won’t get the frizz so often, and your hair won’t dry out as much.

6. Avoid sulphates

When you do shampoo your hair, avoid shampoos that contain sulphates, especially if your hair has been coloured. Sulphates are used in shampoos to create lather, but they are very drying for kinky, curly and wavy hair and they can cause breakage and split ends.

7. Detangle curly hair when it is lubricated

Detangling is probably one of the biggest problems there is with curly hair, but you should avoid detangling your hair when your hair is dry or you will cause breakage. The best time to get rid of knots and tangles is when your hair is lubricated with conditioner. Use a wide toothed comb or your fingers to detangle, not a brush, and then you will do less damage.

8. Wash with cool or cold water

If you wash your hair with cold water, your hair will be shinier and less frizzy. Hot water will strip the natural oils out of your hair and that will cause frizz and split ends and make your hair more prone to breakage.

9. Take note of what your hair is telling you

Whatever advice you read about curly hair, remember that everyone’s hair is different. Some people have tight curls, some people have kinks, and there are many different types of curly hair so there is no one-size-fits-all solution to curly hair problems.  Don’t assume that because a product worked for a friend, it will work for you. Take note of what is happening to your hair and stick with the products that work for you.

10. Extra conditioning

If you have curly hair, the ends will become dry very quickly, so you will need to pay more attention to conditioning than someone with straight hair would. Always condition after every wash, paying particular attention to the ends of your hair, and choose products that have extra conditioning. Using a deep condition product once a week will also help keep your curly hair in perfect condition.

Stay beautiful!
