10 Great natural home remedies for grey hair

Greying of the hair is a natural part of the ageing process that is usually caused by the slowing of the body’s production of melanin, which is what gives hair its colour. It can also be caused by other factors, though, including stress, overuse of hair products, poor diet, and some illnesses can bring on early greying of the hair. For most people, the first few strands of grey hair they find on their head are the first signs they see of the effect of the passing years, and many people use store bought hair colouring products to hide their silver strands. You don’t need to resort to chemical based products though. There are plenty of natural products that you could use instead. Here are ten of the best natural home remedies for grey hair.

1. Black tea

Black tea is one of the most common home remedies for grey hair. To colour your hair with black tea, make some very strong tea with two teabags in a cup of boiling water, add a pinch of salt, and allow the tea to cool. You can then use the cold tea as a final rinse when you wash your hair. When you rinse with the tea, leave it on your hair for about twenty minutes and then rinse, once again, with some lukewarm water.

2. Onion juice

Onion juice is said to both slow the greying process and help stop hair thinning too. Recent research has also suggested that the greying process can be speeded up by a decrease in the amount of an antioxidant, called catalase, which is found in the hair follicles, and onion juice can promote the production of his antioxidant. To gain these benefits, massage onion juice into your scalp and leave it to sit for about half an hour, before rinsing it out; the only downside of this treatment is the unpleasant small that can stay with you for weeks, so it’s best to avoid this treatment if you have a sensitive nose.

3. Curry leaves and coconut oil

Curry leaves are extremely good at returning the colour to black hair and they also contain important nutrients that will make hair soft and shiny. Coconut oil is a great conditioner for hair. To use the two together; heat up a handful of curry leaves in a small amount of coconut oil until the leaves turn black, allow the mixture to cool, and then massage it into your hair and leave it to sit for twenty minutes.

4. Lemon juice and almond oil

Another one of wonderful home remedies for grey hair is a mixture of lemon juice and almond oil. Almond oil is a very rich source of Vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that can help to prevent the premature greying of hair, and lemon juice provides vitamins B, C and phosphorus, which will promote stronger hair growth. Mix two tablespoons of almond oil with three tablespoons of lemon juice and massage the mixture into your hair and scalp. Leave it in your hair for about half an hour and then, wash it out with a very mild shampoo.

5. Rosemary and sage

Rosemary and sage are a part of traditional home remedies for grey hair that help the grey strands blend in better with the coloured strands to make the grey ones less noticeable. Steep half a cup of rosemary and half a cup of sage in water and allow it to cool before you apply it to your hair. If you repeat this daily, you will see a gradual reduction in the appearance of grey hairs.

6. Blackstrap molasses

You can also treat grey hair through what you eat and one of the recommended foods that will provide the nutrition that you need to slow the greying process is blackstrap molasses. Blackstrap molasses is a good source of copper, which the body uses in the production of hair pigment. If you eat a tablespoon of blackstrap molasses every morning, you should see a reduction in the number of grey hairs you have within a month or so.

7. Salmon

Salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and that is well known for its ability to help slow down the ageing process of the skin, but did you know that it can stop the premature greying of your hair too? As well as omega-3 fatty acids, salmon is also a good source of selenium, which manages the production of the hormone that triggers greying of the hair.

8. Asparagus

Adding more asparagus to your diet could also slow down the greying of your hair. Asparagus contains a range of nutrients that will help to slow the greying process, including iodine, copper and folic acid.

9. Kale

Kale is another excellent source of the nutrients that can prevent grey hairs. It will provide you with copper, iron and folate, all of which will help to promote the production of the pigments that provide the colour in your hair.

10. Ginger and honey

A daily dose of ginger and honey is also said to prevent premature greying of hair. To use this, age-old traditional remedy for grey hair, mix up grated fresh ginger with a tablespoon of honey and take this daily.

Black tea and onion juice really surprised me when I read this article, as well as salmon! But there will be no harm if I try it for a couple of times and find out if the results are appealing or not. I just have to say that lemon juice and coconut oil are amazing because I’ve tried them before.
