10 Fabulous summer hair care tips

You’ve struggled your way through those cold winter months, eagerly anticipating the onset of the longer days and warmer weather and, suddenly, it’s arrived!  The summer sun, though, along with chemicals from the pool and salt from the ocean, can play havoc with your hair, so read these ten hair care tips to keep your hair looking beautiful, all summer long:

1. Protect your hair from the sun

One of the most obvious summer hair care tips is to protect your hair from the harmful and aging effects of the sun, just like you do protect your skin using SPF creams. If you are going to be out in the sun for a long time, then wear a hat or a scarf to protect your hair from the harmful rays of the sun. The sun can very quickly dry your hair and a hat will also help to protect your face from sunburn as well.

2. Deep condition your hair regularly

Another one of important summer hair care tips is to deep condition your hair regularly during the summer months. Deep conditioning your hair, at least, once a week, is even more important in the summer, than it is in the winter. Your hair has a hard time in the summer with the heat, being doused in chemicals in the pool and you are constantly styling and re-styling it, so condition it regularly and replenish some that important moisture that has been lost.

3. Protect your hair from the chlorine in the pool

Summer hair care tips also include protecting your hair while in the pool. Before you dive in the pool, treat your hair with a silicone based protecting product first (or simply wear a hat). The silicone will act as a barrier to the water and the chemicals in the pool and will stop them from penetrating your hair. Especially important, if you are blonde, as chlorine can turn your hair green!

4. Water is the king; always stay hydrated

Dehydration is not good for your body and neither is it any good for your hair. Drink plenty of water, throughout the day and it will help to keep your skin glowing and your hair healthy and shiny.

5. Keep your hair well-trimmed

Another one of great summer hair care tips is to trim your hair regularly. Have your hair trimmed once a month or once every two months during the summer. This will remove any dry or split ends that might have occurred, so that your hair will look thicker and fresher.

6. Wash your hair before and after swimming

Washing your hair after a swim will wash out any chlorine or salt, but if you also wash your hair before a swim, the hair strands will already be soaked before you jump in and so will absorb less of the water from the pool or the ocean.

7. Less of blow-dryer is best

Try not to use the blow-dryer so often in the summer; your hair is getting enough heat already. After shampooing, gently towel-dry your hair instead and let the summer warmth do the rest. Also avoid using hot water when you shampoo your locks, as it can dry out your tresses.

8. Shampoo your hair more frequently, but use a gentle shampoo or use natural ingredients from your kitchen

You will produce more sweat and oils in your scalp in the summer, so if you have naturally oily hair, then you may need to shampoo every other day or even more often. Use a gentle, natural shampoo and remember that, even with oily hair, you might still need to apply conditioner to the ends of your hair to stop them from splitting and drying out. Did you know that you can shampoo your hair with eggs, yogurt or baking soda? Here is a couple of easy recipes of natural shampoos:

– Mix 3 egg yolks with a tablespoon of sweet almond oil and gently massage your scalp and hair with it, then rinse away and condition as usual.

– Mix one cup of plain yogurt with two egg yolks to obtain a smooth paste, then wash your hair with it, just as you would do with your regular shampoo; rinse off and condition.

9. Use an oil massage once a week

To bring life and shine back to your hair, try a weekly hot oil massage. Massage some warm olive oil into your hair (use argan oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil or coconut oil) and leave it on for about 20-30 minutes. Then wash and condition as usual, and the oil will moisturize, rejuvenate and nourish your locks beautifully, adding shine and glossiness.

10. Eat healthily

It is always advisable to eat healthy, fresh food, but even more so in the summer. Feed your hair from the inside by eating plenty of high protein foods like fish, eggs and nuts. It’s even easier in the summer, because all the high protein foods go so great with salads; and if you want a dessert, give your preference to fresh fruits instead of cakes and sweets. Not only will this type of healthy diet be beneficial for your hair, but also for your beautiful figure!
