Wherever you are, New Year is always a special and exciting time. It represents a new start with new opportunities and who can tell what other amazing things the New Year will bring! Some places around the world put on more of a show than others, so here are ten places around the world that celebrate the New Year in style:
1. Edinburgh, Scotland
The New Year celebration, called Hogmanay, lasts for three days and the fun begins on December 30th. There are outdoor concerts, street parties and a spectacular fireworks display over Edinburgh Castle. As well, of course, as the rousing choruses of ‘Auld Lang Syne.’
2. London, England
The chiming of Big Ben is what signals the New Year in London and Londoners gather on the bank of the Thames to watch the amazing fireworks that are displayed on The London Eye, as well as Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. It’s a spectacular, traditional, New Year Eve’s party that attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year.
3. Sydney, Australia
Sydney is the first major city in the world to see in each New Year and, when the clock strikes twelve, they put on the world’s biggest fireworks display, in Sydney Harbour. Over a million people attend the Sydney New Year Celebrations, which include aerial displays, an aboriginal New Year’s ceremony, as well as the fantastic fireworks.
4. The Bahamas
In the Bahamas, you can see in the New Year, with a Caribbean twist. Beach parties and Mardi Gras style street processions take place on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day and you have the beautiful beaches to recover on, after all the celebrations are over, as well.
5. Las Vegas
On New Year’s Eve in Vegas, the main strip becomes a giant, car free, street party where over 250,000 revellers descend to enjoy the celebrations. They have live bands, fireworks and no end of parties in the clubs and bars and, come midnight, fireworks are released from the rooftops of the buildings along the strip.
6. Niagara Falls
You can’t get a more spectacular backdrop to the New Year’s celebration than the mighty Niagara Falls. Here, they host a free event that boasts of not one, but two incredible firework displays, along with a live music concert too.
7. Hong Kong
The Hong Kong skyline is a spectacle any time of the year, but when it is lit up by a dazzling fireworks display that just seems to get bigger and bigger every year it is truly breathtaking. The main focus of the festivities are Victoria Harbour and you can catch the show from a hotel rooftop party, a harbour side bar or, even better – from a boat in the harbour.
8. Rio Janeiro, Brazil
Rio hosts the one of the largest and, possibly, wildest New Year’s Eve celebrations in the world. More than two million people flock to Copacabana Beach for the uniquely Brazilian party that combines tradition, superstition and religion with the Brazilian party style.
9. New York
The world famous New York celebrations may be a bit too much for some, but there is no denying it’s a spectacle! A million people gather together in Times Square to watch the famous musicians perform and the twelve foot wide crystal ball descend.
10. Tokyo, Japan
The Japanese New Year celebrations last for up to a week and the main place to be for the Japanese New Year, or ‘shogatsu’ is undoubtedly Tokyo. Here you can experience an entirely different style of New Year celebration and, in virtually every temple and shrine you can find, you will find something new to see.
