10 Celebrities Who Come From Wealthy Families
If you’re anything like us, you’ll love a bit of celebrity gossip and intrigue. Although it was fairly common for celebrities back in the seventies to be plucked from working-class obscurity, such as Al Pacino and Marlon Brando, there are a number of actors and celebrities who were actually doing quite alright for themselves before making their millions in the show business industry.
Not every star goes through a rags to riches story, and some would probably have still amassed a fortune had they never stepped foot in front of a camera. Yep, a fair amount of celebrities came from wealthy families and had quite the head start in life. Let’s take a look at who was rich and not so famous before they got richer and famous.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s career has experienced something of a renaissance recently, thanks to her star turn in the U.S. political TV comedy Veep. Before that, she had already found cult fame playing the role of Elaine Seinfeld, in a comedy “about nothing.”
Currently, she has a net worth of around $200million, which is pretty staggering for a comedy actress. She’s used to such head-spinning figures, though, as she is the daughter of billionaire Gerard Louis-Dreyfus, a man who was worth $3.4billion back in 2006. His wealth goes all the way back to Julia’s great-great grandfather who founded the Louis Dreyfus Group back in 1851.
If you’ve ever seen Chevy Chase’s madcap comedies, you wouldn’t have ever though that this guy could be wealthy. And you definitely wouldn’t have thought that he came from a wealthy background.
Wacky star of Caddyshack, Three Amigos! and the bonkers National Lampoon’s Vacation movies, Chase’s first name is actually Cornelius. Now, doesn’t he sound well-to-do all of a sudden?!
Indeed he is. Chevy (as we prefer to call him) came from a very wealthy family. His dad was a big Manhattan book editor, and his mother was a concert pianist. He is a fourteenth-generation New Yorker and can count two former New York City mayors among his ancestors.
Some actors struggle to find their big breaks. They drive thousands of miles to auditions, “star” in lame Japanese adverts, and make ends meet by delivering pizzas at 1am to irate mid-westerners.
Other actors, such as Jake Gyllenhaal, are born to parents who are film directors and Oscar-nominated screenwriters.
There is nothing working-class about New York City garage rock outfit The Strokes. Although they used to dress in rags at the beginning of their career, the aesthetically pleasing band were a lot more upper-middle class than most rock bands when they first started out. See, while Keith Richards, Rolling Stones’s dad, was a socialist who laboured 9-5, Strokes frontman Julian Casablanca’s dad founded the Elite Model Management business.
Which basically meant that young Jules was born into affluent surroundings.
Before he sang Last Night, the gravelly-voiced singer went to a Swiss boarding school.
Strange why he never mentioned that in any of his songs?
Tay-Tay is arguably one of the world’s most recognisable female pop stars at the moment. Her hits include Should’ve Said No, Teardrops On My Guitar, and I Knew You Were Trouble.
Not only does T-Swizzy have an uncanny knack for writing catchy songs about her ex-boyfriends, but she’s also very good at marketing, and has largely been responsible for her own branding and rise to stardom.
With that in mind, she probably got a helping hand from her father, who was a Merrill Lynch financial advisor. Meanwhile, her fund marketing executive mom probably gave her some words of wisdom too.
Taylor rode horses during her childhood.
I played with my dolls.
The Kardashian Sisters
Collectively, the Kardashian family is now worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The success of their reality TV show has been unparalleled, and has documented everything about their lives over the last decade, including Kim’s marriages and her hospital test to prove her boobs are real.
But before they got famous, their father was already doing quite well for himself as a lawyer. His circle of friends included OJ Simpson, who Robert Kardashian defended in a court of lawyer when Simpson was charged with the double murder of his wife and her new lover.
Before the Kardashian clan achieved fame on television, their father sadly died.
Ed Sheeran doesn’t look like a pop star. Certainly, the best way to get famous is to look like a million dollars, but although Ed doesn’t look anything like a million dollars, he does have parents who used to run an independent art consultancy. Nowadays, Mr Sheeran is an art curator, and his wife is a jewellery designer. Which possibly explains why Ed got a decent break in life.
Most of the New Hollywood directors who emerged in the late sixties and early seventies didn’t exactly come from destitute backgrounds. Although maverick directors like Scorsese and Coppola tried to inject some dirty realism into Hollywood, neither of them had particularly lived a grim reality.
The same can be said of Wall Street director Oliver Stone, a man who shot his first movie in 1974, but whose career didn’t really take off until Platoon (1986). Stone was born into wealth, as his father was a stockbroker who gifted his son a financial internship in France when the budding film director was just 15. Stone went on to study at Yale.
Like Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga is very image conscious and knows exactly how to brand herself. She’s been dressing up in wacky clothing ever since Poker Face hit the radio several years ago, and she knows that there is no reason to drop the whole charade while she’s on top.
Her business nous has no doubt come from her father Joseph Germanotta who founded Guest WiFi, a successful Internet company that marketed services to hotels. Germanotta now owns House of Gaga Publishing.
When she was a child, Ms Gaga attended Manhattan’s Convent of the Sacred Heart private Catholic School.
Ariana Grande might look like a 12-year-old kid with more pocket money than sense, but she’s actually already 22 and that pocket money is actually $5million.
Not that she’s a stranger to lots of pocket money. Her dad is the CEO of Ibi Designs Inc., a design company who can list Eddie Murphy among its clients.
