9 Genius, natural overnight beauty treatments to try
Beauty sleep is not called that for nothing. While you sleep, your muscles relax, including those in your face, so your skin relaxes too, and this is something it definitely needs. Wrinkles subside, cells regenerate, and that’s even without you using any cosmetic aids. But, since you’re sleeping, why not enhance the effects of sleep on your skin? Overnight beauty treatments are an excellent way to pamper your skin while you sleep, and they don’t require any time management equilibristics on your part. No, you just put on a cream or a mask, and slip into a dream world. Here are nine natural overnight beauty tips that you can try.
Relaxed or not, skin loses more moisture during the night, so make sure you apply a moisturising substance on your face and neck before you go to sleep. Almost any vegetable oil is a good choice here, especially deeply moisturising ones like argan oil, sweet almond oil and grapeseed oil. These are extremely rich in polyunsaturated fats and can do wonders for dry skin and wrinkles.
2. Fix your hands
Days are tough for the hands – you touch so many surfaces and have to wash your hands so many times that, unless you’re religiously devoted to hand cream application, you can end up with dry skin that needs taking care of. Do it during the night and don’t be economical with the cream or oil (coconut oil is great). If things are really bad, you can even use a very rich, nourishing and softening cream and put a pair of gloves on for maximum effect.
3. Make your nails stronger
You can also use your beauty sleep time for strengthening and nourishing your nails. There are branded nail strengtheners out there, containing natural ingredients, such as wheat protein and calcium, that can fix brittle nails in no time. Don’t forget your cuticles, which also suffer during the day. Rub in some cream or olive oil in them too to help them regenerate.
4. Get thicker lashes
It’s amazing what you can do for your beauty while you sleep. Getting thicker, healthier eyelashes is one of the best beauty tricks. All you need to do is apply some cold-pressed castor oil, using a cotton bud, along the edge of your upper lid, at the base of the lashes. Go to sleep and in the morning wash as you normally do, this doesn’t need any follow-up cleansing or anything. Within a month you’ll start seeing the first effects of this treatment. (If you don’t have castor oil, then you can use olive oil instead, it will have similar result).
5. No more puffy eyes
There’s hardly anything worse than waking up with the feeling that your face is so puffed up with retained water that you can’t see clearly. To avoid this effect, sleep on your back, so the water inside your body can go to other parts, rather than collect in your face, which is what happens if you prefer to sleep on your stomach. An added benefit of sleeping on your back is that you’ll avoid getting “sleep lines”, wrinkles that are made deeper by your pillow, more pronouncedly on the side of your face you prefer to sleep on.
6. Repair heels and elbows
That’s the tip most of us are probably familiar with. If you have dry, cracked heels and a similar problem with your elbows, the night is the time to take care of the problem. Apply a deeply moisturising cream or sesame seed oil, put on a pair of soft socks (athletic no-heel socks for the elbows) to make sure the softening substance soaks in well and you can drift off safe in the knowledge that you’ll have nice soft, heels and elbows in the morning.
7. Pamper your hair while you sleep
Night is the time to deeply condition your hair, and to give it everything you can’t give it during the day. One easy way to make natural conditioner consists of mixing four tablespoons of coconut oil, a teaspoon of vitamin E, a teaspoon of jojoba oil, and a few drops of lavender oil. All you need to do is mix them thoroughly and you’ll only need a very, very small amount to make your hair glossier and stronger. Apply it while the hair is wet and leave it overnight.
8. Whiten your teeth
This one you can do anytime but during the day, after this treatment, you’d have to steer clear of food and drinks for an hour afterwards, so you need to pick the time carefully. At night, you don’t have such concerns. So, mix some baking soda with your favorite toothpaste, and brush your teeth for a couple of minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Baking soda is a versatile substance and one of its many uses is as an effective natural teeth whitener. (Avoid doing this treatment too often though, as it might damage your enamel; also, avoid doing this treatment altogether, if you have sensitive teeth).
9. Soften your lips
Lips require the same level of care as the rest of your face and body. Night is the best time to let your lip balm work undisturbed, but first exfoliate your lips with a lip scrub (sugar plus olive oil work wonderfully) or use a soft sponge once every two or three nights. After the exfoliation, apply your favorite lip balm or shea butter, and apply it generously. You’ll wake up to soft, ultra-kissable lips, if you do it regularly.
