11 Inexpensive beauty tips for babes on a budget
When money is tight but you still want to look your best, what’s a girl to do? Beauty products can be so expensive, but a lot of what they contain can actually be found in a rather unexpected place – your kitchen! If you are on a tight budget or you simply begrudge paying all that money to a cosmetics company, then take a look at our list of simple, everyday products that you can use instead:
1. Homemade body scrub
Exfoliating is only a case of rubbing something coarse on your skin that will remove the dead skin cells without damaging your skin and all you really need is some sugar or coffee grounds. Mix some raw sugar (or coffee grounds) with olive oil (yes, the olive oil from your kitchen) and use it as a body scrub. This homemade body scrub is just as effective, as an off the shelf exfoliator.
2. Foot powder
Forget all the expensive branded foot powders, just sprinkle some baking soda mixed with a couple of drops of orange essential oil (oil is optional) on your feet to keep them fresh and odor free; and it will reduce the sweating too.
3. Natural hair conditioner
Honey can have many different uses in your budget beauty regime and here’s the first: to nourish and rejuvenate dry hair, massage a tablespoon of honey into your wet hair after washing and then, rinse out for a wonderful, natural homemade hair conditioner. If you don’t have honey, try making a vinegar rinse: mix half a cup of vinegar with 3 cups of water and rinse your hair with it after shampooing (you can vary the amount of vinegar and water); don’t rinse vinegar out. Even though vinegar might smell a little kinky, but it’s a proven and popular natural way to make your hair shinier and healthier.
4. Natural bubble bath
If you like to soak in a refreshing bubble filled bath, but you don’t like the price tag on commercially available bubble baths, then just mix half a cup of basic liquid soap with half a cup of honey, add half a cup of olive oil (it will make your skin soft and glowing) and some water; then pour it into the bath, as you would a regular bubble bath. You’ll get all the bubbles you could wish for and a healthy, nourishing treatment for your skin as well.
5. Homemade teeth whitener
That famous brand of whitening toothpaste, with a logo containing an arm and a hammer, is only using what you already probably have in your kitchen. Just sprinkle a little baking soda on your toothbrush for pearly white, sparkling teeth for a fraction of the cost. But don’t do it every day though, because it can be damaging for your teeth.
6. Nail stain remover
Lemons have a natural and gentle bleaching effect, so to remove yellow stains from your nails, soak your nails in a mixture of one part lemon juice and two parts water for around 5-10 minutes and the stains will disappear.
8. Homemade acne treatment
Most shop bought acne treatments rely on salicylic acid as their active ingredient, but you don’t need to spend a fortune to get the benefits of this compound. Here is how you can make a homemade acne treatment yourself: mash up some fresh strawberries and mix it with a little yogurt (in proportions 1:1), spread on your face and leave for 5-10 minutes. Strawberries are a natural source of salicylic acid and this will do the job just as well, as any other acne treatment.
9. Eye puffiness treatment
There is no need for expensive eye creams if you want to remove puffiness around your eyes. You can use sliced potatoes, cucumber or even cold tea bags. They all do the same thing.
10. Homemade face mask for glowing skin
For an inexpensive, yet effective face mask, mash up a half of ripe avocado, apply on your face for 5-10 minutes and rinse off (if you have dry skin you can add a teaspoon of olive oil or coconut oil to this mask). This homemade face mask will nourish your skin and leave it glowing and healthy looking.
11. Rose water as a face toner
And finally, if you’ve just finished the bottle of your favorite face toner, don’t rush to the shop for a new one, try a wonderful beauty product from your kitchen – rose water. Use rose water as your natural face toner, it will nourish and rejuvenate your skin, making it soft, supple and hydrated, and it smells pretty amazing too!
