10 Tips on how you can use lemon in your beauty routine
If you think that lemons are only good in lemon chicken, lemon cakes and floating in a glass of gin and tonic, then think again. Lemons have many different health benefits, ranging from a defence against cancer to treating an upset stomach. But, did you know that lemons can also be used as a multipurpose beauty product? Here are ten things that you use lemons for in your beauty regime:
1. Strengthen nails
Long nails are beautiful, but they can become brittle and break. To strengthen long nails, bathe them in lemon juice for about 5-10 minutes, and the lemon juice will strengthen the nails and it will remove any yellowing or stains too.
2. Hair rinse
Lemon juice can be added to warm water to create a pure and simple rinse for your hair that will reduce the dullness caused by hard water and soap residue. Add a tablespoon or two of fresh lemon juice to a cup of warm water and use as a rinse. Leave it on for about a minute and then, rinse out with warm water.
3. Remove dark spots and stretch marks
Many women use lemon juice as a natural skin lightener. Mix some lemon juice and sweet almond oil with honey and rub into dark skin areas or stretch marks, leave on for 5-10 minutes, then rinse away; and, over a period of time of repeating this, the marks will begin to noticeably fade.
4. Dandruff treatment
If you suffer with dry and flaky scalp, then lemon juice could be the answer. Rub a tablespoon of lemon juice mixed with a tablespoon of honey into your scalp and then, shampoo and rinse as normal. Repeat every two or three days for a week and your scalp, and your shoulders, should become clear.
5. Take a relaxing lemon bath
Relaxing in a beautifully fragranced lemon bath is the best way to unwind after a hard day’s work. Juts add some slices of lemon peel to bath water, switch on some soothing music, lay back and enjoy.
6. Removes blackheads
Caused by excessive oil in the skin, blackheads are annoying and can be embarrassing. Squeezing them can just make matters worse, so dab on some lemon juice at night (dab only and exclusively on blackheads, don’t apply all over your face!), before bed and leave it on overnight. Repeat this for a few days and the blackheads will vanish. (If you have a severe case of acne and blackheads, best option is to consult a professional.)
7. Add highlights to fair hair
For the sun kissed look, apply this mixture on the strands of your blonde hair: mix of ¼ lemon juice and ¾ water; and the lemon juice will add natural highlights for you. For extra blonde highlights, let the mixture dry in the sun.
8. Homemade lemon face scrub
If you do have oily skin and are prone to acne, then a lemon face scrub will help to keep the acne at bay. Mix a tablespoon of lemon juice with 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt, 2 tablespoons of rolled oats and a tablespoon of honey (mix all the ingredients and wait until the oats become soft, add some water if necessary), and this natural scrub will gently exfoliate your face and the antibacterial properties of the honey and lemon will keep your pores clean and infection free.
9. Teeth whitening
For gleaming white teeth, mix a teaspoon of lemon juice with a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and mix with your regular toothpaste. The lemon juice also makes a great breath freshener as well. Don’t do it often though, as it can make your teeth sensitive.
10. Homemade lemon body scrub
For an all over body scrub, mix the zest of one lemon with half a cup of olive oil and a cup of sea salt. The scrub will exfoliate your body, the oil will nourish and moisturise your skin and the lemon will leave you feeling clean and refreshed.
Before using any homemade beauty treatments, make sure your are not allergic to the ingredients.
