10 Tips on How to Find the Best Fragrance for You
Christian Dior once said “A woman’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting”, so choosing a fragrance that is right for you is something that is worth taking your time over. But, if you have ever tried to find your perfect signature scent, you will know how hard it can be to find the perfect match to your personality and your mood. One thing you need to know about perfume is that your body chemistry changes from season to season and from one year to the next, so what suited you perfectly last summer, may not work so well for you this winter. If you have trouble deciding on which perfume is really you, these ten tips will help you find the best fragrance for you.
1. Decide on which scent families you prefer
There are so many wonderful fragrances out there that it makes even knowing where to start look for the perfect perfume for you a challenge. The best way to start honing down your list of possible to manageable size is to decide on which family of scents that you like the most. Perfumes are usually categorised by families, or notes. The main ones are floral, fruity, woody and spicy. Of course, there are many variations of these, but deciding on one of these broad families will make it easier when you come to selecting perfumes for testing.
2. Think about your own personality
As Christian Dior said that a woman’s choice of perfume says a lot about her, so your choice of perfume should reflect who you are. Don’t be swayed by what perfume your friends wear or by celebrity endorsements, go with what matches your personality. Think about whether you consider yourself to be sporty, bubbly, sultry or earthy and choose a perfume that matches that self-image.
3. Take your time browsing
While deciding on the broad family of fragrances that would suit you will make it easier to come to a shortlist, don’t completely rule out other types of fragrances. It’s well worth just taking a browse around the perfume counters and trying out a few samples. Take your time browsing and remember, its’ always better to test a perfume on your skin than it is on one of those tester strips. We also suggest that you don’t impulse buy. Perfume can smell different after it has been on the skin for a while, so wait until you get home and then see what you think about a fragrance.
4. Don’t test too many scents all at the same time
You will never be able to make up your mind which perfume is the best for you if you overload your senses with too many scents at one time. The maximum of different perfumes you want to test at one go is probably three to five at the most. Any more than that and all the fragrances will just melt into one.
5. Ask for samples
Most good perfume stores will have sample bottles that you can take away with you and test at home. You can also often buy perfume sampler boxes that will give you the chance to test out a number of different fragrances. It’s much better than buying a whole bottle of a perfume that you later decide you don’t like.
6. Consider the other scented products that you use
Some scents really don’t work well together, so think about the other scented products that you use when you are choosing a perfume. The fragrance of your moisturiser, your soap, your shampoo and any other products that you use on a daily basis should, ideally, complement each other and not clash.
7. Do your research
There are literally thousands of perfumes that are available on the market and most people are not even aware of many of them. Thankfully, there are also lots of perfume bloggers who keep their finger on the pulse of the perfume industry to keep us informed of what’s new. If you are looking for some new ideas, then it’s a good idea to sit down and check out some of these perfume blogs for reviews of fragrances that you otherwise might not have even known about.
8. Be prepared to choose more than one perfume
If you are very lucky, you will be able find a single perfume that says it all about you and will fit your every mood. However, it’s more likely that you will have two or three fragrances that you love that fit your various moods as well as the occasion. Don’t get hung up about finding one signature scent, you’ll have more fun when you have a selection to choose from.
9. Don’t forget about the classics
The classic perfumes, like Chanel No 5, are timeless classics because they are so good, so don’t just write them off because they have been around for a while. New perfumes come out every year, but it’s always good to have at least one of the classics ready for a special occasion.
10. Ask the experts
If you are really stuck for ideas, try asking the perfume counter staff for some advice. In a good store, they will know what all the latest perfumes are and they will have a good knowledge of the classic perfumes too, so don’t be afraid to tell them that you are looking for something with notes of grapefruit zest, black pepper, ginger lily, and sage, because they might know just what you mean.
