10 Tips on how to care for cracked skin on your hands and feet

Cracked, dry, skin on your hands or on your feet, is not only unsightly, it can be very painful too. Dry skin can be caused by a big number of different things. The cold wind in the winter can dry out your hands and spending too long on your feet can cause the skin on your heels to crack. If you suffer from cracked skin on your hands or your feet, here are ten tips on how to take care of the problem.

1. Exfoliate regularly

Dead and hard skin can build up over time and then it will crack and cause painful fissures in the skin that don’t heal easily. Regularly exfoliating your skin will stop this hard skin developing and, subsequently, your skin will be less prone to cracking.

2. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is a great remedy for cracked skin on the feet, as it will moisturise the skin and it will also help to fight fungal infections. Exfoliate your feet first and then massage in some coconut oil. Cover with a pair of socks and leave on overnight.

3. Shea butter

Shea butter is another simple remedy for dry and cracked skin. Apply and massage in Shea butter to feet or hands, and it does a remarkable job of softening and moisturising the skin.

4. A warm soak

Make your own foot and hand soak with some warm water, a teaspoon of baking soda, a few drops of peppermint oil and a tablespoon of sweet almond oil. You can also add a good handful of fresh rose petals if you like. Soak your hands and feet in the mixture for about ten minutes and it will hydrate and soften your skin.

5. Epsom salts

Epsom salts are great for cracked skin too. It helps to promote the circulation and it also contains magnesium that helps the skin to heal. Just add half a cup of Epsom salts to a bowl of warm water and soak your hands and feet for about ten minutes.

6. Vitamin E

If the cracks in your skin are really bad, Vitamin E will aid the healing process. Open up a couple of Vitamin E capsules and rub it into the cracks in your skin. It will help your skin heal and regrow faster.

7. Lemon and sugar scrub

One way to smooth your skin is to use lemon juice and sugar. Dip a wedge of fresh lemon into sugar and then rub it gently over the affected area; it will help to smooth rough and dry skin. This one is not recommended if the cracks are deep and bleeding though, because the lemon will sting, and sting a lot!

8. Olive oil

An easy way to avoid cracks developing in the first place is to massage your hands and feet daily with some olive oil. Liberally apply the oil and massage in well, and it will keep your skin supple and smooth.

9. Clarified butter

Clarified butter, or Ghee, is a superb remedy for dry and cracked skin. Massage into the affected area, two or three times a day, and it will moisturize the skin and soothe the pain of the deeper cracks too.

10. Honey and Aloe Vera

Mix up equal amounts of Aloe Vera gel and honey and massage it well, into your hands feet. Leave it on for about ten minutes and the mixture will nourish and hydrate your skin leaving it feeling much softer and less painful.
