10 Quick makeup tips and tricks on how to hide a hangover

If things got a little out of hand last night, and you’ve woken up looking as bad as you feel, then read on. Puffy eyes, rough looking skin and a headache from hell are not what you need to take to work with you, so here are our ten tips to quickly fix that hungover look, before you hit the streets:

1. The before bed precautions

Before we get to the ‘morning after’ remedies, there are a few things that you need to do before you go to bed, if you can manage it. Drinking water will help to reduce the overnight dehydration that is the cause of most of the symptoms of a hangover; and try to sleep with your head propped up high in your pillow, this will help to stop the puffiness around your eyes from developing; and, of course, for goodness’ sake, take your makeup off!

2. Take an aspirin in the morning

Even before thinking of heading for the makeup, take an aspirin. It will ease the throb in your head, so that you will be able to concentrate on our makeup tips, and it will also reduce the inflammation and puffiness in your face.

3. Plump up the skin cells with moisturizer and a face mask

Your skin cells will have become dehydrated, so cleanse your skin and moisturize it thoroughly to reduce the redness and diminish the tired looking lines on your face. You can even do a refreshing face mask before doing your makeup, if you have time in the morning: mash a ripe banana or avocado and apply it on your face for 5-10 minutes; it will add freshness and glow to your skin, nourishing and hydrating it. Then, spray some rose water on your face and let it dry naturally. All these steps will help revive your dehydrated skin and make it look healthy and fresh again.

4. Tackle the eyes

It will only take five to fifteen minutes to tackle the puffiness around your eyes, so let’s hope that you have given yourself enough time. Applying some cucumber slices, cool tea bags or potato slices over your eyes for about ten minutes are tried and tested remedies for reducing eye puffiness.

5. Prime yourself

A painter wouldn’t paint without a primer and today is not the day for you to do your makeup without it either. Primer will help your makeup go on smoothly and provide a little camouflage too.

6. Tint and blush

Another simple makeup tip that will help you to hide a hangover is adding some freshness back to your face by using a bronzer and a blush. You’re going to need to add a little more color to your face, so sweeping some bronzer around the perimeter of your face will cover up that pale looking skin, and adding a touch of pink or coral blush to the apples of your cheeks will bring back your fresh, rosy glow.

7. Keep the eyes natural looking

Another makeup tip that can help you, if you overdone it a bit last night, is using light eyeshadow colors on your eyes, instead of dark ones. Dark eyeliners and eyeshadows will just draw attention to your irritated, probably, red and tired eyes, so try using a white or nude shades instead to make your eyes look bigger and brighter.

8. Highlight your lips

Be bold with your lipstick. Using a bright color on your lips will draw the attention away from your tired looking, red eyes, but avoid using lipsticks that are too dark; bright coral or pink lipstick will look more fresh and flattering, than burgundy or dark brown.

9. Don’t forget your hair

You, probably, don’t have time to wash your hair, so a quick dry shampoo will do the trick. If you have none in the cupboard, then a light dusting of talcum powder will remove the oily look too. You can dust talcum powder with your hands and then brush away the excess, or apply it on the roots of your hair using a big powder brush. I use it all the time and it does the trick, my hair looks fresh and ‘newly washed’ right away.

10. Put your hair up

Tying your hair back will give you a wide awake look, even if you don’t feel it. Tie it back tightly enough or braid it, and you’ll even get a mini face lift!

And yes, don’t forget to put a smile on your face, it will instantly make you look radiant, fresh and happy!
