10 Air travel beauty tips
Flying long haul flights can play havoc with your skin and your hair, so how do some women walk off a plane looking like they just walked out of a beauty salon? It’s not just the recycled, dry air that’s the problem on an airplane, it’s the limitations on what kind of beauty products that you are allowed take on board with you and, of course, the cramped space that’s available in the toilet cubicle too. To help you arrive in style after a long flight, we’ve compiled a top ten list of air travel beauty tips that regular long haul flyers and flight attendants know all about, but most of us don’t.
1. Deep condition your hair before you fly
The recycled, dry air, in the cabin of an aircraft will suck all the moisture out of your hair and leave it dry and frizzy. There’s not a lot you can do about that once you get on the plane, so deep condition your hair the night before you fly and your hair will still be in good condition when you land.
2. Drink lots of water
Another one of great air travel beauty tips is to drink plenty of water. The reason that the air is so dry on a plane is that the air at high altitude, which they pump into a plane under pressure to provide you with oxygen, has virtually no moisture in it at all. It’s not only your skin and your hair that is affected by this; it is your whole body. Air crew know all about the effect that dehydration can have on them, so they all drink lots of water throughout a flight; at least a litre for every six hours of flying.
3. Use sunscreen when flying
When you are at high altitudes, you are closer to the sun and the air is thinner, so you are at greater risk from the rays of the sun than you are at ground level. Apply sunscreen to the exposed areas of your skin before you fly and every two hours or so while you are on the flight. It has been proven that frequent flyers and pilots are at greater risk of developing skin cancer than the rest of the population, so don’t risk flying without sunscreen, if you are exposed to sun rays while flying.
4. Get up and move around
Sitting down for such a long period of time as you do when you are flying reduces the blood circulation, which can lead to bloating and pale skin and, if you have your seat tilted back throughout the flight it can make your eyes puffy. Get up and walk around the cabin from time to time, when the seatbelt sign allows, and that will keep the blood circulating through your body and help keep you looking fresh and more awake when you arrive.
5. Don’t wear makeup on long haul flights
Next one of useful air travel beauty tips is to avoid wearing makeup on long haul flights. Flying with a full face of makeup is just as bad for your skin in the same way that sleeping with your makeup still on is. You probably don’t want to walk around the airport with no makeup at all, so take some makeup remover on board with you and remove makeup and moisturise your skin as soon as the plane has taken off.
6. Downsize your beauty products
Airlines have strict rules on the container sizes and types of products that you can take on board of a plane, so check out your airline’s guidelines before you fly. For the items that you really need, buy what you can in travel sized containers, or decant them into small, clear, sealable, plastic bottles. Take only what you need in the cabin, there is no point carrying on anything you aren’t going to use on the flight.
7. Wear a silk scarf when you sleep

Wear a silk scarf when you get your head down and it will help to stop your hair getting into too much of a mess and, use a neck support, which will keep your head off of the seat back and stop the hair flattening down.
8. Take antibacterial hand wipes with you
Antibacterial wipes are a must on a flight. Having some wipes with you means that you can clean up your own hands after you have put any make-up or creams on, and you can also give the TV, tray and any other areas of the plane you might be touching a wipe down too. Who knows where the last person to sit in your seat had put their hands before they got on the plane!
9. Get rid of puffy eyes with an ice cube
Puffy eyes are common after a long flight, so to get the puffiness down quickly, just ask the flight attendant for an ice cube and a napkin. Wrap the ice cube in the napkin and hold it on your eyes for a second or two, then take it away, wait, and repeat; and it will reduce the puffiness in no time at all.
10. Getting ready to land
When the plane starts to land, you can have a quick freshen up of your makeup. Apply a tinted moisturiser and a touch of blush to give you some colour, check your brows and use a brow pencil if needed, add some colour to your lips, and you’ll be ready to go.
