What causes stretch marks?

Medically known as striae gravidarum, stretch marks occur when your skin is forced to stretch rapidly and the underlying dermal structure breaks down. Most commonly caused by pregnancy, they can also be caused by rapid weight loss. The biggest factor, which determines whether or not a person will get stretch marks is if their mother did, because it is very often hereditary. There are steps though that you can take to minimise the risk of getting stretch marks and there are ways to reduce their appearance after the birth and here are some the natural, home remedies that you can try:

1. Moisturise your skin during pregnancy

As with everything, when you are pregnant, the less chemicals the better, so use natural oils or moisturising creams or vitamin E oil.

Another good tip on how to get rid of stretch marks is – watch your weight. Quite obviously, the bigger you get, the more likely it is that you will develop stretch marks, so try and keep to the recommended weight during pregnancy. Doctors suggest that the average weight gain during pregnancy should be in the region of 25 to 35 pounds.

During pregnancy, you should be adding extra vegetables, nuts and fruit and eating protein rich foods to keep your skin supple.

5. Take warm baths with added milk, honey and oatmeal

Another great tip on how to get rid of stretch marks is taking a soak in a warm bath, it will soothe and soften the skin and help it to stretch naturally. If you add some milk, honey and oatmeal to the bath, the solution will help nourish your skin and keep it soft as well.

6. Exfoliate your skin

After the baby is born, or after you’ve lost some weight, exfoliating your skin will help to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. You can’t scratch the marks off, but gentle exfoliation will remove dead skin cells and promote the growth of new ones and so, reduce the marks on your tummy and thighs. There are various exfoliating lotions that are available in shops, or you can also create your own by mixing sugar or used coffee grounds with some coconut oil or olive oil.

7. Don’t stop moisturising after the birth

As before the birth, use natural oils, such as coconut oil, sweet almond oil or olive oil, or use moisturisers like Shea butter or Aloe Vera.

Another simple, yet useful recommendation on how to get rid of stretch marks is – create your own stretch mark treatment. A mixture of honey, sugar and lemon can be very good for fighting stretch marks. The honey works as a natural moisturiser, sugar will help gently exfoliate your skin and stimulate circulation, lemon contains citric acid and will help lighten the stretch marks. The vitamin C will also help with the production of new collagen, which will be needed to repair the damaged skin.

9. Potato juice treatment for stretch marks

Potatoes are also a good natural way to reduce stretch marks. You can either make a juice from a potato and massage that in or simply slice the potato and rub it over your tummy, hips, buttocks, thighs and all the affected areas where stretch marks usually appear. Potatoes contain natural skin lightening enzymes, which will fade stretch marks effectively and fairly quickly.

10. Cucumber treatment for stretch marks

Cucumber soothes the skin and lightens the appearance of stretch marks. Simply rub cucumber slices or cucumber paste over the affected area for five minutes or so and then, place some slices over the marks and leave them there for about 5-10 minutes. Just as cucumber is an effective way of reducing dark circles under the eyes, so it will also have the same effect on stretch marks.

    Very informative tips to get rid of stretch marks. I really like lemon juice to remove stretch marks. Stretch marks are basically a type of scar that occurs when the skin tears. They occur most often when you gain weight quickly and they are especially common during pregnancy. Lemon juice is a common method of improving the appearance of stretch marks.
