Self-confidence pretty much defines our whole life. When we have lots of it, we have the confidence to take action and reap the rewards. We lean it for that first kiss, bag that high-flying career and make a success of our life.

When we’re low on confidence, however, we fail to take action. Our outlook is constantly negative, and we sit at home comparing ourselves to others, wishing we could be like them. We fail in relationships because we hardly even try, and we get trapped in dead-end jobs that we hate.

The way you behave really does affect everything you do, and it affects your mentality, too. Self-confidence is not something that is handed out at birth by the gods; it’s something that we can all easily develop if we do the right things. So, they’ll pick someone they admire and they’ll follow their habits, including what they eat and when they eat, to how they stand and talk.

You can easily do the same. You could watch some YouTube videos of confident people you admire, such as Martin Luther King Jr or Oprah Winfrey, and carefully study how they talk and act.

Then, copy them. Sit there and talk the way they talk and stand the way they stand. Soon, you’ll develop their mindset. It’s unbelievable how well this technique works!

Be Grateful For What You’ve Got

A few months ago, I was low on confidence. I had goals but they seemed too high for me to reach. I was exhausted and on the verge of giving up. I just knew they were beyond me.

But then I was told to remember back to the goals I’ve already completed. For example, I studied for a degree and got it. I wanted to have a wider social circle of friends, and I got that too.

These goals took a few years to complete, but I achieved them all with flying colours.

It’s important to look back on the goals you have already completed because it reminds you that you can do this. You are good enough.

Another reason why our self-confidence can be shot is because we become obsessed with perfection. Because of this, we don’t take any action at all.

But perfectionism is very damaging. You might assume that all the successful people in the world are perfectionists who aim for the sky all the time, but they’re not. Successful people fail all the time, and they know that failure is just a part of the journey.

It’s time to realise mistakes are allowed to happen, and that we use these mistakes to improve and do better next time.

A friend of mine recently said to me that she wants to switch careers and become a hairdresser.

“Great! But why do you look so down?”

“Because I don’t know how to cut and style hair and I’m too old for college,” she answered.

We’re never too old to learn, and the only way to get good at something is to practice, practice, practice. This will give you the confidence needed to go out there and achieve greatness.
