20 Things to be grateful for right now
When life is getting you down and yet another problem seems to be added to your problem list every day, take some time out and think of the things that you have to be grateful for, and you’ll be surprised at how many things are actually on that list. Here are just twenty of the things that most of us can be grateful for. Read them and then start your own list, it’s the best way to get things back in perspective and start to smile again.
Not just your own, but all children. Children have an incredible way of lifting your spirits with their innocence and their easy laughter. The best anti-depressant the world has to offer is to spend some time in the company of children.
Good friends are something to be cherished. They stick by you through thick and through thin, they aren’t judgmental and, certainly, not as complicated, as being in a relationship with someone. Even as other people in your life come and go, good friends still hang around.
You don’t get to choose your family, but somehow they are still there for you when you need them. There is something really special about a blood relative. You can go and visit a cousin you haven’t seen for years and, within minutes, you are chatting away again, like you’ve never been apart.
Don’t ever take your health for granted. If you are in great shape, then be thankful for that and, even if you are not, you can be grateful for the modern medicines and doctors that are there to help, when you need them.
5. A job
If you are in a job, even if you hate it, thank your lucky stars that you have one at all. Employment is not something to be taken for granted these days, so a steady job and a consistent source of income is something to be grateful for.
Many people fear getting old, but think about the alternative. With age comes wisdom, experience and the respect of others and, if you are lucky, a nice long and relaxing retirement too.
Eyesight is something that many take for granted, but some have to learn to live without. If you were to find that you could no longer see the world around you, you might wish that you had been more grateful, when you did have your eyesight.
8. Modern travel
When you consider that a journey to the next big town by horseback might have used to have taken a day and now we can travel to a different country or continent at that time, you might want to add travel to the list of things to be grateful for. Travel has opened up the whole world to us and now there are endless places of interest that we easily can afford to visit.
9. Freedom of speech
Those of us who are fortunate to live in countries where we can speak our minds should be grateful for that privilege and consider what it would be like living in a country were a jail sentence, or worse, is your reward for speaking out.
Can you somehow imagine what it would be like to not know exactly where your next meal was coming from? Food on the table is sadly not a given thing in the world so, as you tuck into your meals today, give a thought to those who won’t be eating today and be grateful that it’s not you.
11. Reading and writing
If you can read and write, you can read books, write love letters and learn new things. There are nearly a billion people on the planet who have not been taught to read. Life would be so more difficult and far less rewarding without the ability to read, so be thankful that you can.
12. Reliable electricity
What? No TV, air conditioning and how do I charge my phone? There are many countries around the world where power cuts are an everyday occurrence, if they have any power at all. The rest of us just switch a switch and it’s there, and we never even stop to wonder at how lucky we are that we have it.
Love, as we all know, can be a double edged sword, but what the world be without it? Not only is love a wonderful feeling, but it inspires us to do so much. Poetry, art and the movies…it would all be pretty bland without love.
The ability to laugh, even when the going gets tough, can get us through many of the ups and downs of life and, whatever mood you are in, hearing someone else laugh will always invariably lift your spirits too.
We should be grateful, even for the challenges that we experience in life. It’s from the challenges and the difficulties that we face that we learn, and that helps us to grow to be a better person and become stronger.
16. Clean water
Nine million people die a year in the world through illness, caused by drinking dirty water. Think about that the next time you turn on the tap and drink a glass of water, whenever you wish.
17. Great days
The sun is shining, your hair looks great and all day long, everything that you touch goes just right. These perfect days may sometimes seem to be few and far between, but when they come, they are absolutely fantastic, so welcome them.
Religious or not, you have to admit that life itself is a gift. A relatively short period of time during which we can experience so much. So long that is, as we take the opportunity to make the most of it.
Sometimes you hate them and sometimes you love them, but people are what really makes the world go round. If you look back at all the people who have passed through your life, you will appreciate just how much you have learned from them and be reminded of all the wonderful experiences that you have shared with, other people.
20. Planet Earth
And finally, spare a thought for our beautiful little planet. Everything that we need is provided for us by planet Earth: air, water, food and sunshine, all contained on one perfectly formed sphere in the middle of absolutely nowhere. Now that’s something to be grateful for.
Actually, there are millions of other reasons to be grateful for.
