10 Amazing Foods That Will Make Your Skin Look Younger

Your skin is your largest organ, so it’s natural that you want it to look as beautiful as possible. Unfortunately, looking after it so that it’s glowing all the time is not easy. Many things can damage your skin, including sleeping with your make-up still on, drinking too much coffee, skipping meals, testing too many cosmetic products, spending too much time in the shower – and eating the wrong foods.

Eating the right foods works wonders for your physical and mental wellbeing. With the right diet, you can lose weight, lower your risk of cancer and heart disease, promote brain health, boost your energy levels – and keep your skin looking younger. If your skin needs a brand new shine, let’s take a look at 10 amazing foods that will make it look young again.

Coffee

Too much coffee can damage your skin, but if you drink just one cup a day, you will be doing your biggest organ a lot of favours.

Coffee contains a compound that can protect you against skin cancer, which is now the fifth most common cancer in America. Researchers have found that just drinking one cup of coffee a day reduces your chances of developing melanoma significantly.

Salmon

Salmon is commonly referred to as “brain food,” and while it’s certainly true that this oily fish is good for your cognitive functioning, what is also true is that it’s even better for your skin.

Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and it is these succulent acids that help your skin retain its moisture, in turn warding off dry skin and roughness.

You should try to eat salmon at least 3 times a week. It can be consumed at breakfast with your eggs, at lunch with a few vegetables, or even at supper as part of a cream cheese bagel.

Watermelon

Watermelon is one of my personal favourite fruits. Rich in water, it’s bursting with flavour and vitality.

This summertime favourite also works healthy wonders for your skin. Rich in an antioxidant known as lycopene, it helps to protect your skin against UV damage.

As we all know, spending too much time in the sun – although relaxing and awesome – speeds up the skin’s ageing process. If you consume more watermelons, you can spend a bit of quality time in the sunshine without having to worry that you’ll age five years.

Blueberries

A perennial favourite of ours here at Beauty and Tips, blueberries are one of natures best gifts for your skin. Easy to snack on, they taste divine and work wonders for your health.

Rich in vitamins E and C, blueberries are able to brighten your skin, balance out your tone and combat free radicals that are trying to damage your gorgeous flesh.

Introducing more blueberries into your diet is easy; you can munch on them throughout the day as a healthy snack, or you can sprinkle a few on your morning bowl of oatmeal.

Tomatoes

When I was younger, my mom would constantly pester me to eat more fruit and veg. It was always the same ones she tried to feed me: Tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce. I wasn’t sold, but today I am.

Tomatoes are one of the reasons why my skin is looking younger than ever. They are rich in an antioxidant called lycopene, which protects your skin against sun damage.

The best thing about tomatoes is that you can do so much with them. I personally love to include tinned tomatoes in my Mexican breakfasts, but your options are endless.

Shellfish

It’s not always that easy to find zinc through our diet, but it’s important that you do because zinc is great for treating a number of skin complaints, especially acne.

According to Whitney Bowe, MD, “Zinc accelerates the renewal of skin cells. That’s why you find the nutrient in many acne medications.”

You can also find zinc in shellfish, including lobster.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are the sweetest and smoothest cat in the entire vegetable kingdom. Richer and tastier than white potatoes, they also offer a vast amount of health benefits – including younger looking skin.

Indeed, of all the foods on this list, few will give you a better glow than sweet potatoes.

And although these guys have a decidedly orange glow themselves, you can be sure they won’t turn you into an oompa-loompa!

Kale

Kale is known variously as “the new beef” and the “queen of greens” – and for spectacular reasons.

Absolutely stuffed with nutrients, kale contains vitamin K, which boosts blood clotting. This is important for good, youthful-looking skin because without enough vitamin K, the blood vessels around your eyes have a tendency to seep, which can easily lead to zombie-like shadows. Not cool.

Kale is also loaded with iron, which is another essential nutrient for better skin. If you don’t have enough iron, your skin can turn pale and it is easier to spot unwanted blood vessels on the surface of your skin.

To get the best out of kale, we advise that you cook it rather than eat it raw.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a staple of the fab Mediterranean diet – and for good reason. It’s a powerful antioxidant that is generally regarded as one of the healthier oils you can cook with. It contributes to longevity, lowers bad cholesterol, and protects your heart.

It also improves the texture of your skin. You can either cook with it or apply it to your skin. Or, you could double down and do both!

Dark Chocolate

Chocolate is many peoples’ mistress, the allure and temptation of which is often too hard to resist.

But, guess what? If you want more glowing skin, you don’t need to fight the temptation anymore. You can give in!

Dark chocolate is rich in flavanols which fight the effects of ageing – including wrinkly, sagging skin.

It’s best to eat it in moderation, though, and the higher cocoa content – the better.

Stay beautiful!
