In 2016, many of us more stressed than ever before. Working in demanding careers for long, exhausting hours at a time, we have to juggle a hectic professional life with a hectic personal life.
The struggle is real, and cases of stress-related burnout are on the rise. Worse still, when we feel stressed, it can be really hard to improve our mood. Although we might put on a smile for the boss, deep down we know we really hate how we feel right now.
There are many ways to counter low points in life that are brought on by stress. Some of my favourite ways to boost my mood include playing my favourite music in the morning, eating lots of nutritious fruit and veg, and getting outdoors as much as possible.
I also feel strongly that what you drink can also have a huge impact on your mood. For example, while the likes of coffee and alcohol can make you feel blue, there are plenty of drinks that can raise your spirits, giving you a mental boost.

Beet juice is not only delicious, edifying and colourful, but it’s also been proven to lift our spirits. This is because it contains a compound called betaine, which is known to boost the production of serotonin, a hormone that makes us happy. Yay!
Water is the elixir of life, but many of us don’t drink no where near as much of it as we should. Why is this? Because just the idea of water is boring? Because it tastes bland? Because it looks boring?
Okay, water is not the most exciting drink in the world. Granted. But according to research, water IS fab when it comes to boosting your mood.
The more water you drink, the better you feel – both in mind and body. Your skin improves, and so does your mental wellbeing.

The best thing to do is to not drink too much orange juice. Our advice is that you have a glass of orange juice with your breakfast to get your day off to a positive start.
Personally, I’ve never liked apple juice. But I have friends who always order the stuff whenever they fancy a soft drink. To me, the tasty is too sour and it makes my mouth feel dry after a while.
But, hey, you’re not going to like every drink on this list. And if water is not for you (okay, it’s too bland, I get it) you might want to try drinking more apple juice instead.

It’s all down to the cocoa content of the chocolate. Containing compounds that encourage the production of the so-called “happy hormone” endorphins, cocoa acts as the perfect fillip for if you’re in need of a pick-me-up. It also contains serotonin, which you will find in many anti-depressants.
This is not to say that you should go crazy with chocolate milk, as too much chocolate is unhealthy. But a few glasses a week? No problem!

If you’re more of a coffee person than a tea drinker, it might be time to switch allegiances. Tea contains less caffeine than coffee, which is a good thing because it’s the caffeine that can bring your mood down.
Chamomile tea is my go-to tea whenever I feel anxious or irritable. It soothes me in the morning and automatically puts me in a good mood.
And, thanks to its stress-fighting compounds, there is no reason why it can’t help you, too.
Another cup of tea that works wonders for your mood is chai tea. Chai is probably going to be preferable to more of you than chamomile tea because its rich in spices such as cinnamon that give it a flavoursome kick.
Not just that, but cinnamon can improve your mood. Whether you consume or just smell this exotic spice, cinnamon can lift gloomy feelings and raise your levels of alertness.

For this, you need a quarter cup of skim milk, a quarter cup of Greek yogurt, 1 tablespoon of peanut butter, a single tablespoon of cocoa powder, one banana and a handful of ice.
