8 Ways to use olive oil for beauty

When I do grocery shopping, I also do my beauty shopping at the same time, because plenty of natural products from a supermarket can be used for our beauty routine.

One of my favorite products is extra virgin olive oil (when I mention the ‘olive oil’ term in this article – I refer to the extra virgin olive oil).

Olive oil is a very popular product that people use for centuries and, nowadays, it still goes strong and is widely used in cosmetic industry.

Olive oil is very rich in vitamins, minerals and natural fatty acids. It’s also convenient for a sensitive skin. Olive oil is a powerful ingredient of anti-aging skin care products; rich in antioxidants, it prevents skin aging, the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, it also nourishes, rejuvenates and protects the skin.

Rich in vitamin E and A, olive oil helps prolong youth, hydrates the skin, maintains its elasticity and softness. Also, olive oil helps skin cells to regenerate. The list of olive oil benefits can go on and on, but let’s talk about practical things: how can you use olive oil for beauty?

1) Olive oil bath

Sophia Loren, gorgeous italian actress, once shared her beauty secret – she loves taking olive oil baths.

To prepare the olive oil bath, just add 5 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil into your bathtub and you are done! (You can add more if you like). This simple, yet amazing beauty secret can make your skin soft and very smooth.

Here is another variation of the olive oil beauty bath: massage your body with the extra virgin olive oil before hopping into your bathtub, after you finish taking your bath, pat your skin dry and wipe away the excess oil; you won’t recognize your skin! It will be amazingly soft and smooth, like a baby skin.

2) Olive oil body lotion

Olive oil is my favourite body lotion! (I don’t buy body lotions and body creams anymore, because I found the one that is very efficient and all natural). I love to apply olive oil all over my body, while in the shower, right after I used the shower gel; after the application of olive oil body lotion my skin feels extremely soft and very smooth! This simple beauty secret is a very quick and easy way to make your skin look and feel healthy and tender to touch.

3) Olive oil makeup remover

I love using olive oil as my makeup remover in the evening. It gently removes makeup and nourishes the skin at the same time. Apply a little bit of olive oil on a cotton pad (or on a damp cotton pad) and gently wipe away all the makeup from your face. If you have a heavy makeup on, then to remove it massage olive oil all over your face first, and then wipe it off with a washcloth saturated with warm water. Repeat a couple of times if necessary and remember to be gentle, never treat your skin harshly. Rinse your face with warm, then splash with cold water; cold water will help stimulate the blood circulation and close pores.

You can also use olive oil as a gentle eye makeup remover; it will easily remove even the waterproof makeup.

4) How to strengthen nails with olive oil?

A warm olive oil bath for nails is an excellent way to strengthen them. It takes only 5 or 10 minutes. Just soak your nails in slightly warmed up olive oil (it shouldn’t be too hot, just a room temperature). Do this treatment once or twice a week and enjoy strong, shiny and healthy nails!

5) Olive oil eye cream

Yes, you can use olive oil as an eye cream. It will nourish the tender skin around your eyes and soften fine lines. Gently dab some olive oil under your eyes before bed time or in the morning. Keep your olive oil eye cream in the fridge and enjoy refreshing, vitamin filled beauty treatment.

6) Olive oil homemade face masks

One of my favorite homemade face masks with olive oil is this: mix one egg yolk with a tablespoon of olive oil (you can also add a tea spoon of lemon juice, if you want to whiten and brighten your skin, as lemon juice is rich in antioxidants and especially vitamin C). Apply this mixture to your clean face for 5 -10 minutes; rinse with warm, then cold water (cold water will help to close pores). This olive oil homemade face mask can be used for normal or dry skin types, it will nourish and soften your skin, adding wonderful glow.

Here is a cleansing and refreshing olive oil face mask for normal skin type: mix a tablespoon of white cosmetic clay with one tablespoon of olive oil. Apply it to your face for about 10 minutes; rinse with warm water.

7) Olive oil for hair

Olive oil hair treatment is quick and easy to make; it will take you only 15 minutes to do it. Mix one egg yolk with two tablespoons of olive oil and a teaspoon of lemon juice. Keep this mask on your hair for about 15 minutes, then shampoo and condition. Your hair will become shinier and softer.

Here is another simple olive oil hair treatment that will make your hair silkier and shinier: it’s easy, just apply slightly warmed up olive oil to your hair, let it sit on your locks for about an hour, then shampoo and condition, as usual (you might need to shampoo your hair two times to get rid of greasiness). This hair treatment will make your hair healthier and will add shine.

8) Don’t forget to add olive oil in your salads! Olive oil will improve your skin, hair and nails, and will nourish your body from within. Remember, beauty starts from within!

Olive oil is one of my favorite natural skin care products.

Many people say they do this, they mix the oil into their usual cream or lotion, and they like it better than applying simply an oil…so it all depends on personal preferences. 😉

I started using Olive Oil a year ago and it has really helped my skin. I used to use just cooking Olive Oil – but it stained my pillows and clothes! I now just use the Olive Night Creme from Made from Earth at night – and it works even better. You can actually feel the real olive oil and olive butter in the creme – and it doesnt stain my clothes or pillows!

I do not use refined olive oil.Are some brands of extra virgin olive oil better than others? When I go to the supermarket how do I pick the best brand to use on my face and hair?

      • Annie
        June 29, 2016 at 9:53 am

Don’t forget that olive oil is a living organism and is constantly changing. It needs protecting from ultraviolet lights and therefore you must always opt for oil in dark bottles. Once olive oil has been placed on a shelf in the SM under ultraviolet lights, it loses its nutrients within a few hours. Additionally, olive oils in supermarkets are often labelled ‘extra virgin’ when they are not. For an O.O to be classed as extra virgin, it cannot be a blend of oils from around the world. Check the labels, if it’s blended, it’s not good. Also, the lower the acidity, the better it is for the skin and the stomach. In England it is not necessary to state the acidity on the label but in Greece for example which is the capital of olive oil, the acidity and UVA exposure are always available to the consumer. Look for a good olive oil online. I have been using this from a friend who brings from abroad for a while and as she has had such good feedback and demand for more, she is now making a go at importing larger amounts. A 750 ml bottle usually lasts me between 6-8 months for beauty only, I keep a separate bottle for cooking.
My favourite way to use this is to mix oil with golden granulated sugar and use it as a full body (including face & lips) scrub once a week in the shower to avoid oil residue round the bath. It’s brilliant because I don’t need to moisturise after my shower so saves on time too! I also add it to home made face creams and masks.

I have heard going out in sun post applying olive oil will make the skin dark. Wanted to know if a hotwater bath after massaging olive oil will make the skin dark? I wanted to try your 1st tip on my baby who is 2 yrs old.

    • Rachel
      March 7, 2016 at 7:50 am

      Hi Lass,

For your question on “Does olive oil cause skin darkening when we take a hot water bath after applying?”

No, it wont change the skin tone. Usually oils just improve the skin elasticity and smoothness. Olive oils reduces black heads, open pore infection and reduce wrinkles. oils from olive, coconut, neem will increase the body heat whereas castor oil act as a coolant. so castor oil should not be applied on kids.

if you want fairer skin for your kid, use 1/2 tbs Sandal and pinch of turmeric, little cream and milk mixture massage it and leave it for some an hour and then give a warm water bath. See to it if your kid is allergic to any of these items and act accordingly.

For diy exfolient,I use organic extra virgin olive oil, organic coconut oil and natural brown sugar. I mix the oil and coconut together, then I add the sugar until I get a smooth consistency.
But if you prefer to make a mask. Just add more brown
Sugar until it’s like a paste. It works wonders. I don’t use lemon coz it’s too acidy. Not a good idea if you have sensitive skin.

I’ve bought an olive oil day & night cream from Holland and Barrett’s. I have noticed that I can only use a small amount of it each time and wipe off the excess oil otherwise it gets into my hair and makes it greasy.
I would be ever so grateful if you could tell me how to use it properly so I can get benefits out of this. Funnily enough, the box which the cream came in does not give instructions.

        Thank you,

I use olive oil in my routine for more than ten years. I suggest you buy a low acidity extra Virginia olive oil and don’t worry much for the brand. I live in Greece so it’s very easy for me to get olive oil and other natural cosmetics based on olive oil. You do not need expensive olive oil for your beauty routine, just low acidity olive oil.

I love to warm up a very tiny amount of olive oil between my hands and then pat it gently on my freshly washed face, while it’s still dump. Then I wait around five minutes and take off the excess oil (if any) with a tissue. It works well for me. I also love using sweet almond oil in the same manner. I do it at night before sleeping and every morning.

It’s hard to recommend anything, dear, because it all depends on the nature of those pimples and what have caused them in the first place. It can be multiple things, like diet, hormones or bacteria, etc. It’s best to consult a dermatologist, especially in case of severe skin problem.

    • Beauty And Tips
      October 6, 2015 at 11:00 pm

Hi Aash, thank you for your comment. I personally love using only natural products on my face; and I’ve had great success with the use of olive oil (a very good quality one), as well as sweet almond oil. I use it every evening as my moisturizer and I also use it all over my body while taking a bath. I also had problematic skin before, especially redness, and it took quite some time to clear it and see results. Diet is also a very important ingredient of clear, healthy skin. I include a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables into my diet, and I think it helped a lot. I should mention that a good sleep pattern and less stress are also major factors of healthy clear skin. There are tons of articles on the site on all these topics and feel free to use a search button on the upper right. I hope this helps. 🙂

Since olive oil contains vitamin E and essential fatty acids is perfect to prevent, delay and diminish wrinkles. It is also effective to treat dry skin because it helps to restore moisture levels in the skin.
