The sun is setting earlier, the leaves are falling from the trees, and your skin is becoming more Egyptian mummy-like with every passing day. Some of us use harsh chemicals on our skin without realizing the damage being done, while others are just prone to drier skin. Whether it’s nature or nurture, dry skin is a battle that none of us should face alone. We have put together every trick in the book so that your skin will stay supple, firm, and hydrated all year long.

Drink water

Hydration, hydration, hydration! Drinking water and staying hydrated is vital to fighting dry skin (and wrinkles caused by dry skin, ugh!). The recommended daily H20 intake for adults is 2 liters, and that sounds like nothing until you reach dinnertime and realized you’ve only had 3 glasses! Try carrying a cute water bottle around in your purse, and setting alarms for refilling. You can also carry a few sachets of delicious teas with you, because tea is very hydrating too. Tea is also fabulous because it’s delicious (duh) and can give you a little mid-day boost of energy when you need it the most.

Shea butter

One of fabulous home remedies for dry skin is shea butter, it is a fat made from the African Shea nut (which comes from the Shea tree). It is raw, organic, and it has a delicious nutty scent – plus it’s excellent for your skin! It has essential fatty acids and has been said to improve collagen production – plus it’s incredibly moisturizing. It is also chock-full of vitamin E, which is applied topically to skin to hydrate and improve the appearance of scars and unevenness. After a shower, apply Shea butter liberally to damp skin and let the silky smooth consistency melt in.

Oatmeal bath

We love oatmeal as a beauty product and one of amazing home remedies for dry skin, because it’s probably already sitting in your pantry! Besides being delicious comfort food on a chilly winter morning, Oatmeal is also fantastic for skin and is often used for skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea. Oatmeal moisturizes, evens skin tone, and prevents inflammation and itching. Run a bath, and add a cup or two of dry or colloidal (finely ground) oatmeal to your tub. Soak, and let the oatmeal do its thing! If you need a quick fix, try Aveeno’s Colloidal oatmeal moisturizer – it’s incredibly hydrating, and relieves all the dry-skin discomfort instantly.

Juicing

You know all those cold-pressed juice bars that have been opening everywhere like vegetables are a religion? There’s a reason they’re so popular – green juice is a killer way to stay healthy and hydrated. The vegetables used (such as spinach and kale) and fruits (such as berries, bananas, and avocadoes) are chock-full of vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty oils. These nutrients will hydrate your skin from the inside out, even if the weather outside is a sub-zero Sahara.

Eat the good stuff

We don’t mean a pint of cookie dough Haagen-Dazs or a McDonald’s Big Mac. Stock your fridge with vitamin-rich vegetables, fresh seafood, eggs, nuts, and berries. These foods are all high in vitamins, antioxidants, and omega fatty acids. Keeping your body well stocked in the good stuff is the best way to guarantee that you’ll be able to maintain moisture and keep a healthy glow going from the inside out.

Avoid the steamy showers

We know, we know. There are few better things than getting home from a long run in Arctic (or, you know, cold) temperatures, hopping into a steaming hot shower with some Bublé and entering a state of Nirvana. However…the hot water is extremely drying on your skin and hair. The best solution is to keep your water temperature warm, with a cool blast at the end to seal in moisture. This isn’t always the most comfortable though – so just make sure you moisturize all over the second you hop out. Using a hydrating oil-based moisturizer is the fail-proof method of keeping your skin smooth and supple for the rest of the day.

Invest in a humidifier

A large part of the reason why your skin gets so dry in the winter isn’t just the cold outdoors – it’s the dry indoors. When our heating systems turn on, all of the natural moisture in the air evaporates (and probably makes its way somewhere nicer and more tropical). The best way to combat dry indoor air is by purchasing a humidifier. Humidifiers can range in price, and you can even add essential oils to some of them, like lavender, eucalyptus, or tea tree oil. Using a humidifier will keep your air moist and smelling fantastic, and your skin will definitely thank you.

Winter moisturizer

That’s right: your usual daily moisturizer just isn’t going to cut it now that your heating system has sucked every last drop of moisture from the air. One way you can amp up your moisture care is by adding a sealing product on top of your regular moisturizer, like Vaseline. This should be done at night, so that your makeup isn’t sliding all over the place. Vaseline will create a barrier between your skin and the air, locking in moisture and giving your skin the time it needs to soak everything in. Also look into oils, such as Bobbi Brown’s Extra Face Oil. It’s more heavy duty than your regular stuff, but it can be used in addition or alone – and it smells uhhhh-mazing.

Use a gentle cleanser

Many of us choose to use cleansers that have some oomph behind them, to remove waterproof foundation, heavy eye makeup, or to battle skin problems. In dry weather, however, gentle is very important. This is because a harsh cleanser can strip your skin of its natural moisture barrier, and result in flaky dryness or an overproduction of oil. Choose a product that advertises itself as gentle, or for sensitive skin, and is fragrance-free. Cetaphil and Kiehl’s both have excellent products that fit this description – and don’t forget about cold cream! Your grandma knows what’s up. Use cold cream to remove makeup, to seal in moisture, and to keep your skin feeling fresh.

Exfoliate

When your skin gets dry, often the dead skin cells can clog your pores and create blemishes of all kinds. Using a good exfoliant will keep your pores clear, and will keep your skin looking vibrant and fresh throughout the whole winter. We always recommend a chemical exfoliation product over a physical one, because physical exfoliation can often be damaging to your skin and it’s natural moisture barrier. Chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid and lactic acid are a great way to keep your skin glowing.

Sleep

That’s right everyone – we’re giving you permission to sleep! It’s important for your overall health to get 7-8 hours of good sleep every night – and it’s good for your skin, too. Sleep is when your body is able to regenerate its cells and heal itself – and your skin is no exception. If you are running low on sleep, your skin will suffer – dark circles, puffiness, and dullness are inevitable. Not only will sleep give you more energy (which is especially important as the days get shorter and darker) but it will keep you looking healthy, and give you the confidence to take on the day!

Exercise

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: exercise and sleep are the two most important things you can do to keep yourself looking fresh and gorgeous. Exercise is very important for a few reasons. Increasing circulation will improve your skin and its natural glow, but exercise also has been shown to release endorphins and reduce stress. A reduction of stress will show on your skin; we all know that stress often appears in the form of blemishes, wrinkles, and dullness. Exercise also has the added bonus of encouraging hydration – another key way to keep your body glowing from the inside out!

Wash makeup before bed

Wearing makeup on a daily basis isn’t ideal for your skin, but many of us prefer to maintain a full face regularly. What’s truly non-negotiable though, is ensuring that all makeup is fully removed at the end of the day before you go to sleep. Your skin needs time to recuperate, and rebuild its natural moisture barrier (which makeup can inhibit). It also needs to repair itself and regenerate cells. Falling asleep with makeup on can dry your skin out – plus, you can’t put on a proper moisturizer with foundation still there! Use mineral oil, cold cream, or a gentle cleanser to make sure that your face is fresh and clean before settling in under the covers.

Always wear sunglasses

The thinnest skin on your entire body is the skin directly around your eyes. As a result, it’s also the most prone to damage and it’s essential that you give it all the protection you can.
